Sufi Style

i found out the other day
that you decided to end it,
with meticulous organization,
i might add,
as is your style.
three letters of explanation,
of farewell
to sister, to parents, to roommates
arranged in a tight line
atop the kitchen table
along with a detailed description
of where the body could be found.
i found out the other day
that as you sat solemnly in your room
with god knows what going through your head
grinding up a mixture of
analgesics into a delicious
death cocktail
the same notes you laid out
in plain view perfection
allowed for a pre-emptive strike
to save your life.
first rule of war:
never let the enemy know your game plan!
sneak attacks, camouflage, silence:
the tactics of a true general.
i suppose you will never make
a great general, but
i suppose that doesn't really matter;
you're a good soldier my friend, and
i'm happy to not have lost you;
be strong, be brave, be courageous,
but most importantly, be alive.
a good soldier must develop immunities
both psychological and physical
to the hardships of war;
just as a fire walker must develop
not only an immunity to the pain itself
but to the idea of pain
caused by fire,
you too must rise above the
destruction of the world around you,
you must see that
faint, flickering, remnant of light
at the end of the tunnel that seems
like an eternity away, and
keep striving towards it.
you are a good soldier, and
we cannot afford to lose you,
for the wars of tomorrow
will be fought not on the battlefields
but in the minds of those
equipped to handle it;
you're equipped to handle it.
you're a good soldier, my friend
so please
return to formation, and
remember the alamo.
