I saw amazing things at the top of the mountain,
Such strange things!
I could no sooner describe them to you than I could
A smile to the blind,
A lover's touch to a bitter old man.
It had taken a lifetime to reach the summit.
Not in reality, mind you;
Only a few minutes then,
But as a culmination-
As a feat, you see-
It was lifetime's work.
Every time a peak seemed close enough to touch,
Another appeared above it,
Always a shortness of breath away.
Wasn't it only right
That when I finally came to the top
My reward should be so great?
Eventually, of course,
I had to start back down.
You can breathe in magnificence
Until your soul is saturated,
But you can't eat it. Or drink it.
And I was getting hungry.
I gave up heaven for pop tarts.
And the climb down was every bit as difficult;
Meager goals make the body languid.
I got in the car and drove off.
Up ahead there was a bigger mountain.
